The blood on the handkerchief changed everything.

The year 1900 promises to be a good one for Rob and Maddie Skivington. Recently married, they look forward to building a home near family and friends in the busy industrial city of Newark where Rob owns a fledgling jewelry business. Then, an irritating cough that has plagued Rob for months turns out to be something far more insidious: tuberculosis.

When Rob’s doctor suggests a change in environment and climate, they sell their business and head to Wyoming in a desperate quest for health. They soon find themselves pitted not only against the harsh environment and natural predators, but also against a group of ranchers who seem determined to send them back to Newark.

But sometimes the strongest storms of all are those that rage within. When despair and loneliness and tragedy strike, the couple must turn to God to help them weather those onslaughts or risk being torn apart.

My Thoughts

Songs in the Storm was not what I was expecting at all. I am not saying that in a bad way at all, so don't misunderstand me. After reading the first book I didn't think these were the characters we would be encountering in book two in the series so I was quite surprised but it was a good surprise. Although this is book could technically be read as a stand alone I don't think you would want to. This sort of picks up in one of the scenes at the beginning of book one but told by the point of view of Maddie and Rob who we encounter in the first book as Jenny's traveling companions.

It was nice to see Jenny and some of the characters from the previous book but the story is definitely all about Maddie and Rob and their journey towards a new life. Rob is battling with tuberculosis and they need his lungs to be out in the open air of Wyoming rather than the pollution of the city. They become sheepherders and start a new adventure. A lot of things happened throughout the story and they had to learn a lot about trust in God and make Him the priority. Not focus so much on the wants they had but rather what God wanted for them.

Overall I thought this was a great addition to the series. I am curious on where the next book will take us and who it will be about. I should warn you that this book does have a scene where someone is sexually assaulted. It is not explicit it in any way but wanted you to be aware in the even that this is a trigger for you.

If you are looking for a new author and you enjoy historical fiction romances then I definitely think you should give this one a try!

My Rating: 4 Stars/Really Liked it
