My Thoughts

Well once again I won't be having much to say as this is the only book from the series I have ever acquired and it happens to be the last one and this is definitely one of those series you must read in order. My librarian finally asked me what I did since I kept asking for books haha. When I told her I reviewed books she was was excited. She actually put these on order for me since our library system did not have them. She was excited about them as she read the blurb so I know I won't be the only one reading them! So needless to say I didn't get very far into this book before I had to stop.

I will say this from what I have read so far. The author drew me into the story immediately. There are many biblical truths throughout the story that I found refreshing. The characters are written with such descriptive qualities you feel as if you have known them forever.

I promise once I have read the whole series I will come back and update my review to reflect what I truly think on the books. As for now I am rating solely on what I read so far which was good chunk of the story and the author's style of writing.

My Rating: 4 stars/Really enjoyed what I have read so far!

I received a copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

About the Author

Award-winning author Sharon Hinck writes “stories for the hero in all of us”—stories about ordinary women on extraordinary faith journeys. Known for their authenticity, emotional range, and spiritual depth, her novels include the groundbreaking The Sword of Lyric fantasy series and the imaginative new The Dancing Realms series, which began with the Christy Award–winning Hidden Current and was followed by Forsaken Island. Sharon’s writing has also been honored with three Carol Awards. For this latest series, she drew on her experience as a ballet teacher, dancer, and choreographer.

More from Sharon

Windward Shore is the final book in the Dancing Realms trilogy. In the earlier books, Carya and Brantley have already faced down a corrupt Order, a world that has forgotten truth, and a whole new island that has sold its soul. Yet in this new story, old enemies return—at the worst possible time. Confronting the past becomes a vital part of protecting their future.

We all face trials in life, seasons that are more challenging than we expected, opportunities to deepen our faith as we lean into God, times that test our courage. But I’ve found that sometimes the most difficult problems are those that I think I’ve already beaten—and then they rise up again. I drew from that experience to shape the new battles in Windward Shore.

Q: In the Dancing Realms series, the Maker has given dancers a special gift to serve their world. Why did you choose dance as a means for bringing provision or protection?

A: I was a dancer and choreographer for many years before becoming a writer. Dance is a means of communicating with the whole being—heart, mind, and body. So dance became a beautiful way for Carya to connect with her Maker and serve her world.

Q: What other interests shaped the series?

A: I’ve been studying cults and how people become trapped in lies, and more importantly, how they find freedom. So that concept helped me create the various traps that characters faced in all three books.

Q: What is a key theme in Windward Shore?

A: Although I write “Stories for the hero in all of us,” I recognize that we can’t always be the hero—at least not in our power. Our determination alone isn’t enough. Our Maker calls us to dependence on Him, and often He asks us to lean on others as well. That’s a key challenge that Carya faces in Windward Shore.

Never Miss by Melissa Koslin ~ Book Review

ABOUT THE BOOK

Author:
 Melissa Koslin
Genre: Christian Mystery and Suspense
Publisher: Revell
Release Date: May 4, 2021
Pages: 352

Former CIA sniper Kadance Tolle possesses a special set of skills and a rare pedigree. She comes from a family of assassins, and by saving Lyndon Vaile's life she risks being found by them. Despite the danger, Kadance feels compelled to help Lyndon discover who is after him--and his research that seems to prove that the Ebola virus was manmade and is about to be weaponized.

With shadowy figures pursuing them and a Mastermind watching their every move, Kadance and Lyndon must scramble to stop an impending bioattack at the State of the Union address. But their warnings fall on deaf ears, and it becomes increasingly clear that there's no one they can trust--except perhaps each other.

MY THOUGHTS

What a great debut novel by Melissa Koslin!! It grabs you right from the start and takes you in an adventure for sure. I mean it definitely kept me guessing on who the culprit could be and you want to know more about these characters who have some past stories that aren't just given to you from the start.

We meet Kadance and Lyndon right from the start and they are the most alike yet opposite people that you could ever encounter. I say alike because they both seem like huge introverts. You can tell that they are a bit awkward in society but yet know how to handle themselves. That is the only thing that they really have in common though. Kadance is a former sniper with a peculiar childhood and past. She tends to keep her feelings inside and doesn't reveal much of herself. Lyndon on the other hand is extremely bright (i mean the guy has 3 doctorates and is only 30!!), is one of those people with a photographic memory and can read people very well so he understands Kadance better than anyone ever has. I found these characters to be truly fascinating and so unlike anything I have ever read before.

The action and suspense were great as well. It keeps you guessing on who it could be and it truly is non-stop. They are going from place to place trying to find clues as to why someone wants Lyndon and why do they want him? There was a surprising twist that I didn't fully expect and I was all for it. It keeps you at the edge of your seat or for me up all night trying to finish it! My only complaint is the ending. I felt like it was a bit rushed and abrupt. I think there could be a bit more and who knows maybe we can see these characters again? After all this is only her first book!

Overall I thought this story was great and I can't wait to see what other stories Koslin comes up with. This story didn't have an "in your face" aspect of God's word but you can read in between the lines the message of forgiveness throughout it. If you are a fan of Christian Suspense then I recommend you pick this one up!

My Rating: 4 Stars/Really Enjoyed it!

I received this book from the publisher Revell. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

MY THOUGHTS

This collection of contemporary retellings of fairy tales was simply enchanting! You fall in love with all the characters in the different stories for different reasons. The idea of the fairy tale is there so you can kind of decipher which story is coming from which fairy tale but they have their own unique twist to make them a bit more interesting for us adults reading them. You will laugh and do that sigh of enchantment when reading a romantic story. You know the one I am talking about. The one that gives you all the warm and fuzzies!

I definitely recommend this one. This would be a great book to add to your summer stack! So grab yours now!

Chased by M. Liz Boyle ~ Book Review + Giveaway

About the Book

Book:  Chased
Series: Off the Intinerary, Book 2
Author: M. Liz Boyle
Genre: Christian Y.A.
Release Date: June 1, 2020

It’s been a year since Marlee, her sisters, and the Miles boys survived an avalanche. Sure, it was a little embarrassing for them when all the neighbors saw them on the news, but they love being outdoors, and what are the odds that another tragedy would strike this adventurous group? Has anyone calculated the statistics of being hit with two natural disasters? It has to be low, so of course the two families planned to backpack again this summer.

When the teens first meet Thad, a dehydrated hiker on the trail, they give him water and food and help him recover. He seems harmless until he tells them to hike a few extra miles at sunset. Then Lydie finds a hand-drawn map that Thad dropped, and they discover why he is so eager to get away from the Stanley girls and Miles boys. So eager that he starts chasing them.

Now they have to climb up unforgiving ridges, sneak through the night, and – is that thunder and lightning? To make matters worse, Marlee has a nagging worry that her older sister Ellie is preparing to move away from home.

What is God’s plan? How will they get away from Thad before it’s too late?

My Thoughts

Chased in the second book in the Off the Intinerary Series. Although I think it did well as a stand alone I think reading the first one would have given better insight into these characters. In this book we see the sisters Marlee, Ellie and Lydie as well as their friends Sawyer and Marshall. The book prior has already prepared this group of teens for the danger they encounter throughout this story.

I really enjoyed how the author includes the parents in the story. It was nice to read a young adult story in which the family unit is an important role. We don't see that in mainstream books nowadays which is a shame. The story does focus on the teens and they are both mature in mind but also spiritual mature which also was nice to see that in a story. I can see how this would be very relatable to teens reading this story. I know I was lost in the story.

Overall I thought this story was good. It has action, adventure, suspense and above all God's word is woven throughout the story. Definitely a story I will be adding for my tween to read in his booklist as I think he will enjoy it.

My Rating: 3 Stars/Liked it!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

About the Author

Liz is the author of the Off the Itinerary series, the wife of a professional tree climber and the homeschooling mom of three energetic and laundry-producing children. She received her Associate’s of Arts at the University of Sioux Falls, where she received the LAR Writing Award for her essay entitled, “My Real Life Mufasa.” Liz once spent a summer in Colorado teaching rock climbing, which she believes was a fantastic way to make money and memories. She resides with her family in Wisconsin, where they enjoy hiking and rock climbing. Liz and her husband have also backpacked in Colorado and the Grand Canyon, which have provided inspiration for her writing. She likes making adventurous stories to encourage others to find adventures and expand their comfort zones (though admittedly, she still needs lots of practice expanding her own comfort zone).

More from Liz

Five years ago my husband Dustin and I took a dream-come-true trip to the Grand Canyon. On the first day we hiked to the bottom of the Cathedral Staircase. To picture the Cathedral Staircase, think of the longest set of stone stairs in the world, double it, and put it in a (scenic) pizza oven. Oh, and strap a 50-pound bag to your back. It was there in the sun that we met a young couple who was sorely unprepared for the elements of the Canyon. The young lady had signs of heat exhaustion, and the guy didn’t have a clue what to do. Thankfully our group was able to help them and call backcountry rangers to get the couple to safety. The situation was eye-opening on many levels. After the shock of witnessing such a close call settled down, my creative side saw the experience as inspiration for Avalanche’s sequel. Except in my book Chased, I added a plot twist. When the dehydrated hiker recovers, he becomes a threat to the very people who saved his life. I had a blast writing Chased, and I hope you enjoy the adventure, too!

Prairie by Chautona Havig ~ Book Review + Giveaway

May 29, 2021

About the Book

Book:  Prairie
Series: Journey of Dreams, Book 1
Author: Chautona Havig
Genre: Contemporary Christian Fantasy
Release Date: February 13, 2013

What if you could literally wish your life away?

My name is Jessa Davidson, and I awoke one day in the place of every dream I’ve ever had—the prairie.  I don’t know how I got here or where here even is, but I know one thing for certain. I can’t go home again. Ever.

If I’ve learned one thing being in this beautiful place, it’s that no matter how perfect it and its people seem, sin lives in the hearts of men and women in Prairie, too. The differences between Prairie and Pittsburgh? There are too many to count.

I grew up hearing the words of the Apostle Paul. “I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.”

Here in Prairie, they’re not a lesson. They’re a warning.

I’ve been given a gift—the greatest desire of my heart. A life in the place of my dreams, a chance at love and family, a sense of real belonging.

Can I hold onto it? Time will tell—time I may not have if I can’t learn to be content.

Prairie is the first book in the Journey of Dreams, a series of related but stand-alone contemporary Christian fantasy novels exploring truths in a whole new way.

Click here to get your copy!

My Thoughts

I've read a few books by Chautona Havig and this is definitely a different genre for her. In this story we meet Jessa who has dreamed to to live in the prairie and encounter the prairie life that it became a reality for her. Jessa has a lot going on and she keeps wondering how in the world she got to the Prairie. There is a mystery element that I won't reveal but it definitely keeps you reading to find out what happens.

It was a different type of story full of fantasy elements which is not my genre but Chautona does a wonderful job at pulling you in and weaving God's word throughout the story.

My Rating: 3 Stars/it was different but good.

I received this book through Celebrate Lit. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

About the Author

Author of the bestselling Aggie and Past Forward series, Chautona Havig lives in an oxymoron, escapes into imaginary worlds that look startlingly similar to ours and writes the stories that emerge. An irrepressible optimist, Chautona sees everything through a kaleidoscope of It’s a Wonderful Life sprinkled with fairy tales. Find her at chautona.com and say howdy—if you can remember how to spell her name.

When Your Novel Teaches You an Important Lesson

I’ve told the story before, but I’ll tell it again. Prairie began as a dream. For several days in a row, I fell asleep and found myself lost in the sway of prairie grasses undulating to the strains of “Theme from a Summer Place.”

It’s a bad habit of mine, but despite being in the middle of a writing project, I wrote down my thoughts—my impressions. Two strange things happened.

First, the story came out in first person. Folks, I don’t write in first-person perspective. Not my novels, anyway. I don’t enjoy reading it, and I really don’t enjoy writing it.

Jessa, however, demanded I let her tell her story… her way. So I did. And it’s one of the fastest novels I’ve ever written.

There’s irony in that.

You see, I didn’t know where that story would go. My dream only replayed the scene of Jessa waking up on the prairie and not knowing how she got there—only knowing she could never go home. Beyond that, I hadn’t a clue.

And though I wanted to rush through so I could see where the story would take me, and though I wrote at breakneck speeds, the story unfolded at its own pace.

The people of Prairie live a different life from anything you’ve ever seen—and yet it is mostly very familiar. One thing, however, sets it apart.

Time.

Only in Prairie does time not work as it does here, and that changes everything. The story begins slowly and for a reason. Line by line, observation by observation, step by step through the grasses and down rutted lanes, the story draws you out of the breakneck speed of modern life and into a world that, if you aren’t careful, will whiz by faster than is even possible.

Here in our world, that is.

There… you’d better watch out.

Has anyone ever warned you not to wish your life away? It’s just a gentle reminder that if you’re always eager for today to end in hopes of a more exciting tomorrow, you may find you never lived.

In Prairie? It might actually happen.

About the Book

Megan McCormick doesn’t leave Atlanta looking for love. Far from it. She runs to the mountain town of Laurel Crest to flee from her past and a broken heart. When she’s knocked over by Lee Grainger, handsome veterinarian and lover of small-town living, Megan’s life takes an unexpected turn.

After a case of mistaken identity is cleared up, Megan and Lee strike up a friendship. Lee is everything Megan ever wanted—smart, loyal and dedicated to his faith. But Megan has experienced deep betrayal twice, and she’s reluctant to give romance another try.

Can Megan come to terms with the secret that haunts her, get past her distrust of men, and accept the love Lee offers or will her heart be broken again?

My Thoughts

This was a sweet friends to lovers story which is one of my favorite tropes! Megan and Lee are great characters and of course there was the adorable dog. They definitely go through some challenges but overcame them with grace and it felt very realistic which is not really read often in romantic stories. They both go through changes and face things from their past like trust issues, abandonment and lies. It was great to see these characters grow throughout the story.

The author does a great job at weaving in God's word of forgiveness and the truth that there is not greater gift than to lay yourself before the Lord and welcome Him into your heart. Overall I thought this was a sweet book and although this was my first by this author it will definitely not be my last!

My Rating: 3.5 Stars/ Really enjoyed it!

I received this book through Celebrate Lit. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

About the Author

Lesa Henderson has been an avid reader since she first learned how to read and loves getting lost in the world the author creates. She’s been writing since the age of 10 and has since been published in many national magazines and is also a screenwriter. She lives in Florida with her husband Ken, their three children and a Schnauzer named Jackson.

More from Lesa

In Someone To Trust Megan McCormick (the heroine of the story) though very disciplined,  loves icing-filled, chocolate chip cookies.  I love the combination myself.  Especially butter-cream icing.   I’ll do an extra mile of running to have one.

She’s also a bit of a klutz and I drew some of her mishaps from my own unfortunate past episodes.  I’m a bit more graceful now but  definitely share some embarrassing incidents with Megan.   I’m also a screenwriter, so I did my best to relay Megan’s clumsiness, in a way hopefully that reader could easily see in their mind.

I wanted to tell a story of someone who was very broken by her father’s betrayal of her mother when she was a little girl.  Many of us have suffered father wounds that greatly impact us, even down the road in our lives.

As the story began forming  in my mind, I wondered what would happen if Megan became the very thing she despised her father for?  How would that impact her life?  Naturally, it would compound her distrust of men, as well as bring on self-loathing.

Of course this brought up the issue of forgiveness.  Not only the ability to forgive those who have hurt us but also the grace to forgive ourselves.

This is something Megan needs to learn.  Although, she is beautiful and caring,  her heart is cloaked in bitterness and she’s running from her past.  And we all know, sometimes our past comes back to haunt us when we least expect it.
