ABOUT THE BOOK

The Indebted Earl
Title: The Indebted Earl
Series: Serendipity & Secrets #3
Author: Erica Vetsch
Publisher: Kregel Publications
Release Date: March 23, 2021
Genre: Christian Regency Romance

Can Captain Wyvern keep his new marriage of convenience all business--or will it turn into something more?

Captain Charles Wyvern owes a great debt to the man who saved his life--especially since Major Richardson lost his own life in the process. The best way to honor that hero's dying wish is for Wyvern to escort the man's grieving fiance and mother safely to a new cottage home by the sea. But along the way, he learns of another obligation that has fallen on his shoulders: his uncle has died and the captain is now the Earl of Rothwell.

When he and the ladies arrive at his new manor house in Devon, they discover an estate in need of a leader and a gaggle of girls, all wards of the former earl. War the new earl knows; young ladies and properties he does not. Still wishing to provide for the bereaved Lady Sophia Haverly, Charles proposes a marriage of convenience.

Sophie is surprised to find she isn't opposed to the idea. It will help her care for her betrothed's elderly mother, and she's already fallen in love with the wayward girls on the Rothwell estate. This alliance is a chance to repay the captain who has done so much for her care, as well as divert her attention from her grief. When Wyvern returns to his sea commission, she'll stay behind to oversee his property and wards.

It sounds so simple. Until the stalwart captain is arrested on suspicion of smuggling, and Sophie realizes how much he's come to mean to her. Now she'll have to learn to fight, not only for his freedom but also for his love.

Author: Daniel Schwabauer
Genre: Christian Fiction, Futuristic Action & Adventure

It’s the war story he’s dreamed of. But the battle may cost him his mind.

Military journalist Raymin Dahl thinks he’s finally getting the story of a lifetime. Secret peace talks on a remote tropical moon are about to surrender five colonized worlds—and six hundred million civilians—to a ruthless enemy.

But when his commanding officer, Captain Ansell Sterling, is fatally wounded before the negotiations can begin, Dahl can no longer just report on the mission. He’s ordered to complete it. With help from the AI embedded in Sterling’s comms bracelet, Dahl must impersonate his commander—a Marine Corps hero and psychological operations expert.

However, Sterling’s AI may be luring him to surrender more than he realizes. And the mission Corporal Dahl thinks he’s running isn’t the only operation underway.

My Thoughts

By now if you have hung around the blog or my Instagram long enough you know what kind of books I like and tend to lean on. I do try to push myself out of my comfort zone but most of the time its no avail. Speculative and Sci-Fi is just not for me... especially when its super sci-fi like this book was. However I know there are tons of people out there that love it and that's the beauty of different genres. So my review is mainly on the style of writing. There was lots of adventure, action, mystery and suspense. Definitely nor one of those stories you will figure out right away as there were some things I did not see coming. So definitely keeps you reading.

The author does a great job at playing mind games with you throughout the story. I would not considered this a Christian story but I felt like there was no Christianity in it and there are few scenes in which the main hero character reminisces about his past and it just didn't jive with me.

Overall if you enjoy adventure and guessing games while you read this may be the story for you!

My Rating: 3.5 Stars/ It was not my jam but an okay book.

I received this book from the author. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

More from Daniel

The Operation Grendel Origin Story

I’ve always been fascinated by the power of storytelling, especially as a lever for moving culture.  For several years I studied the development of modern propaganda, the rise and fall of yellow journalism, and the relationship of these to psychological warfare. This culminated in 2017 with a brief investigation into quantum computing and the rising popularity of trans-humanism. Sometimes the best story ideas are combinations of things that have rattled around in the back of your mind for years.

Operation Grendel is a keyhole glimpse of a future in which every person in the galaxy is bonded to an artificial intelligence. Some AIs are embedded in the brain, and some are snapped onto the wrist as a wearable device. I didn’t realize when I started writing the book that Elon Musk had already launched Neuralink to create this technology in real life. I discovered the corporation after finishing my fourth draft.

The use of this technology probably means a lack of autonomy. How can you think for yourself, or even know what you think, if your thoughts are constantly being shaped and influenced by a quantum computer wirelessly connected to your brain?

Then again, is that all we really are as humans—biological computers? I don’t think so. But if not, then there will surely be resistance to the trans-humanist movement. Which means, in a work of fiction, clearly opposing sides. One empire supports this integration of man and machine; the other places limits on AI technology.

But “warring empires” was not a story I felt capable of telling. I wanted something closer to home, something smaller and more accessible, something more human. I wanted to show what a life spent entirely under the influence of an inner nanny—a substitute Holy Spirit—might look like.

Well, who better to tell that story than a man who has, in his own way, been manipulating others through storytelling? In other words, a journalist.

This fit my desire to write the story as military science fiction. Since I never had the honor of serving in the armed forces, I needed a way to give my narrator a believable voice. Corporal Raymin Dahl, a military reporter who barely scraped his way through reservist boot camp, fit the bill.

Before long the story seemed to take on a life of its own.

Pages: 432

Calcutta, 1886.

Ottilie Russell is adrift between two cultures, British and Indian, belonging to both and neither. In order to support her little brother, Thaddeus, and her grandmother, she relies upon her skills in beetle-wing embroidery that have been passed down to her through generations of Indian women.

When a stranger appears with the news that Thaddeus is now Baron Sunderson and must travel to England to take his place as a nobleman, Ottilie is shattered by the secrets that come to light. Despite her growing friendship with Everett Scott, friend to Ottilie’s English grandmother and aunt, she refuses to give up her brother. Then tragedy strikes, and she is forced to make a decision that will take Thaddeus far from death and herself far from home.

But betrayal and loss lurk in England, too, and soon Ottilie must fight to ensure Thaddeus doesn’t forget who he is, as well as find a way to stitch a place for herself in this foreign land.

My Thoughts

I have been wanting to read a book by Kimberly Duff ever since she released Mosaic of Wings. (I have the book in my extremely long TBR pile!) I was so happy to be able to review this book. This story is filled with SO much! The author does an incredible job at drawing you in with her descriptive words. She paints such a beautiful picture with words and makes you feel like you are in the different locations this story takes place in.

The story is jam-packed with so much emotion. It encompasses big feelings such as loss, pain, rejection and feelings of loneliness. I'm not going to lie, tears were shed and the tissue box got put to use as I went through Ottilie's journey. Despite all of that what I loved most is how her faith in God grew and was made stronger throughout the story.

Although there was some romance in the book. I honestly think the story could of been just about Ottilie and it would have been just as good.

I didn't want to give too much of the story away because you should really take the time to read it. Just be mindful that it is emotional and you may need some tissues handy. I can't wait to see what else Ms. Duffy writes in the near future!

My Rating: 5 Stars/ Loved the book!

I received this book from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

About the Author

Kimberly Duffy is a Long Island native currently living in Southwest Ohio, via six months in India. When she’s not homeschooling her four kids, she writes historical fiction that takes her readers back in time and across oceans. She loves trips that require a passport, recipe books, and practicing kissing scenes with her husband of twenty years. He doesn’t mind.

More from Kimberly

When I set out to write a new novel, I plan the entire thing from start to finish. I write down each scene on an index card and know exactly what’s going to happen when I sit down for the day’s work. I’m meticulous that way.

But I never plan my characters’ spiritual arcs. Because I want their faith journey to be organic to the story. I want it to feel authentic. It’s such an important part of each of my books and I recognize that some things just refuse plotting and need to develop in a more natural way.

My debut novel, A Mosaic of Wings, features a heroine steeped in science. Nora loves the natural world and so her faith was encouraged by studying the wings of a butterfly or examining an interesting plant. She’s not particularly sentimental or emotive so the faith element of that story had to be presented in a way that made sense for her. Nora’s faith arc is subtle.

Not so for A Tapestry of Light. I had no intention of writing a book that delved into my own struggle with doubt. But that’s what Ottilie required. And it wrung me dry.

Then built me back up.

My faith story is a twisted kind of one. Raised a Christian, I went into ministry, firmly attached myself to the faith of my childhood, and thought it would never waver.

I was wrong.

Oh, how it wavered. For whatever reason, when I hit about 30, it seemed everything I had always believed no longer made sense. It was devastating. Terrifying. And it broke me.

But brokenness is its own sort of beauty and when you recognize there is no way for you to pick up the pieces yourself, God can come in and fill those cracks and shattered places.

Those five years of doubt and questioning and facing the reality that even though I’d always loved Christ, I didn’t really know Him (and didn’t really know why I believed in Him), were some of the most painful I’ve experienced. But I believe with every bit of my being that God is in the business of redemption. Of restoration. Of filling up so that we can pour out.

And he took my own very personal struggle and helped me turn it into a story that, I hope and pray, might encourage others. I gave Ottilie my questions. I gave her my doubt. I gave her my fear and desperation and, in the end, I gave her my hope.

There’s a little piece of me in each of my books, but this one contains my heart.

Bag of Lies by Ricky Dean Wyrick ~ Book Review

March 29, 2021

ABOUT THE BOOK

Author: Ricky Dean Wyrick
Genre: Christian Suspense
Series: A Broken World Adventure, Book 1
Release Date: March 23, 2021
Pages: 319

What happens when childhood friends join opposite sides of the Civil War? Can friendship survive? How do you bring yourself to kill your best friend?

Bag of Lies introduces a broken world where the closest of brothers become hated enemies. Brimming with danger, deceit, and espionage, the epic struggle is laced with betrayal and grief. Follow Michael and Lucky as they sift through loyalty and lies, discovering that nothing is as it seems. Does Lucky pull the dagger from his back and plunge it into Michael's heart? Or is there something more sinister at play in his Bag of Lies?

This suspenseful, faith-based adventure may first appear like historical fiction, but nothing could be further from the truth. Things are not as they seem. A shocking plot-reveal, several chapters in, dramatically changes the perceived genre and cleverly weaves a series of secrets and lies into a fantasy adventure filled with peril and betrayal.

Discovering the true nature of the novel is part of its charm. To say more would ruin the experience.

MY THOUGHTS

This is definitely not a book I would normally pick up. Not because I don't enjoy suspense because I definitely do, I just typically will read them when there's an added element of romance thrown in. That being said I though this book was good. Definitely filled with twists and turns that were not expected. The story takes you on a journey to the Civil War where childhood friends find themselves at a cross road. There is lots of intrigue, suspense and betrayal to keep you engaged and reading. The author does a great job at weaving Biblical truths into the story. It definitely makes for an intriguing adventure.

Although I thought there was enough resolution at the end of the story there is somewhat of a hint of what it yet to come in a second book. I would definitely recommend this if you enjoy reading war type stories full of suspense and a twinge of fantasy. This could also be read by an older middle schooler.

My Rating: 4 Stars/Well written and enjoyable

My Dear Miss Dupre by Grace Hitchcock ~ Book Review

March 28, 2021

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Author: Grace Hitchcock
Genre: Historical Christian Romance
Series: American Royalty, Book 1
Publisher: Bethany House Publishers
Release Date: March 2, 2021
Pages: 368

Willow Dupré never thought she would have to marry, but with her father's unexpected retirement from running the prosperous Dupré sugar refinery, plans changed. The shareholders are unwilling to allow a female to take over the company without a man at her side, so her parents devise a plan--find Willow a spokesman king in order for her to become queen of the empire.

Willow is presented with thirty potential suitors from the families of New York society's elite group called the Four Hundred. She has six months to court the group and is expected to eliminate men each month to narrow her beaus until she chooses one to marry, ending the competition with a wedding. Willow reluctantly agrees, knowing she must do what is best for the business. She doesn't expect to find anything other than a proxy . . . until she meets Cullen Dempsey, and she must discover for herself if his motives are pure.

MY THOUGHTS

What a great fun story this was! I mean from the very first chapter it has you chuckling. Willow Dupre is part of one of the most elite families of New York in 1883. However, she is not your typical socialite. She is smart and extremely business minded as she has been trained by her father to one day take over the sugar empire he father has built. However the board members only see Willow as a woman who should be paying more attention in finding a husband rather than concerning herself with the business. Due to her father's health declining, both her parents come up with a plan to marry her off. Oh goodness this was hilarious! Her mother was hilarious in all of this!

The romance in this was nail biting for me! There were two great candidates in my opinion and one of course that was running the lead the whole time but of course only one can "win" the competition and win Willow's heart. I will not give you any clues because you really should read the story! But I will say that Willow does have some tough choices ahead of her. She definitely seeks guidance from God but in the end she has some tough choices to make as she must trust herself to do so.

Overall this book was great! I really loved the spin off of the TV show the Bachelorette in this setting. There is intrigue, suspense and of course romance! I can't wait to read more from this new to me author and see where the next book in the series takes us! I would love to have a story with Willow's best friend Flora and if you read it you'll know why!

My Rating: 4 Stars/Really liked it! Swoon worthy characters for sure! Can't wait for the next one!

I received this book from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

My Thoughts

What a great story based on a subject that I don't think it is often read about in fiction books. The WASP or Women Airforce Service Pilots, were brave women who served during WWII to free male pilots for combat roles. This was a good read about this part of history even though women weren't truly accepted in this role. The character of Evelyn was written perfectly. She is a determined woman who wants to succeed in everything she does especially as a pilot. Unfortunately for her the instructor she is assigned is a past boyfriend and you can tell right away that things did not end so well for them.

This is a new to me author. She did a great job and interweaving faith throughout the whole story. There is also an element of mystery and of course romance. It was a sweet short story about fully relying on God and no one else. I recommend you pick this short read if you enjoy WWII type stories. I have added Ms. Matchett to my very long list of to-be-read authors!

My Rating; 4 Stars/Really enjoyed and liked this book

I received this book from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

More from Linda

Dear Readers:

It’s all I can do to parallel park my car…well, actually I can’t. I’m terrible at that sort of thing, which is why I’m so impressed with the Women’s Air Service Pilot who served during World War II. Created in August 1943 by merging the Women’s Flying Training Detachment and the Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron, the WASP was a civilian organization that came under the authority of the Air Force and freed male pilots for combat or other duties. Their leader was the intrepid Jacqueline Cochran, an award winning pilot who set and broke numerous records during her career.

Qualifications for the program were stringent, and of the more than 25,000 women who applied, only 1,800 were accepted. Of that number, 1,074 completed the program. These women flew over sixty million miles and transported every type of military aircraft from the ninety-nine foot long B-29 Bomber that weighted over 100,000 pounds to the P-51 Mustang that could fly at over 400 miles per hour.

The WASP also towed targets for live anti-aircraft gun practice, simulated strafing missions and transported cargo. Thirty-eight WASP members lost their lives and one disappeared while on a ferry mission, her fate still unknown. Disbanded in December 1944, the WASP did not receive military status or benefits for their service. However, after nearly three decades its members were granted veteran status, and in 2009 they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

It is my hope that Love at First Flight honors these brave women in some small way.

Blessings,

Linda Shenton Matchett
