Let's Talk! Going to the Zoo by Lisa Jacovsky ~ Book Review

June 30, 2021

About the Book

Book: Let's Talk! Going to the Zoo
Author: Lisa Jacovsky
Genre: Children's Fiction
Release Date: April 14, 2021

Harper and Emma are two best friends who first met at the pool in the summer. Emma has Autism which affects her speech, but she does not let it slow her down. She has a different way to communicate. Harper learned about Autism and how to communicate with her new best friend. Now the girls are getting ready to go to the zoo for the first time. What animals do you think they will see?

While enjoying the animals Emma becomes excited and flaps her hands, making noises. A group of children come over and begin to point and stare. What do you think Harper does when she sees this group being not nice to her friend? Come find out when you read the next book in the Lets Talk! Series.

My Thoughts

This was such a great book and one that every household and schoolroom should have. Lisa Jacovsky does a great job at speaking regarding Autism and autistic behaviors. Being a former public school teacher I always talked about this with my students so they wouldn't be surprised or dare make fun of others like the students in the book.  I know children always have questions so this is the perfect book to explain it in a way that children could easily understand. The illustrations are also beautiful and filled with details that are easy to understand the story.

The story has best friends Emma and Harper who are heading to the zoo. This is Emma's first time experiencing the zoo. She gets super excited and reacts in the way she knows how to express herself. When kids start making fun of her Harper stands up to the kids and explains that being different is okay.

This is a truly a book that should be part of everyone's library. It will spark great conversations and could even be used as a lesson for elementary school students and homeschool families.

My Rating: 4 Stars ~ Really Liked it

My Thoughts

So I totally wasn't expecting the high intensity moments in this story but I loved them!! It just kept you engaged the whole time and I wanted to know more. Definitely one of those books that keeps you up because you want to know what is going to happen next! It also had some moments where I did chuckle and even some heartfelt moments which occurred at just the right time in the story. The Christian message was interwoven beautifully throughout the story and you know I completely appreciate that.

The characters were great! Jessica is running away from the man who killed her father. She is not your typical damsel in distress though. She is feisty and very independent but also has that softer side that catches the eye of Blake, the sheriff, who is the ultimate gentleman. It has my favorite trope which is marriage of convenience and those always catch my attention quickly. The characters are all very well written and extremely likable. You can't help but be engaged with them.

This is my first book by this author but it certainly won't be my last! This is also book two in the series but it can be read as a stand alone. Overall I really enjoyed the storyline and recommend it if you enjoy Westerns, romance and a little bit of suspense!

My Rating: 4 Stars ~ Really Liked it!

More from Tanya

Fiction to Reality

Ever had those moments when you’re reading a novel and it’s as if the author wrote the story line, the characters, or included verses just for you? When your world turns from fiction to reality with the flip of a page?

At the beginning of December in 2014, I took a novel from my bookshelf, snuggled on the couch with a blanket, and began to read. The title of the novel is called The Rancher’s Reunion by Tina Radcliffe. The hero in the story is Will, and he has a hereditary disease that caused him to fear, not only his future, but in trusting God. And that’s when God used this story to speak to me.

“I’m scared, Annie.”

“I know, Will. I know.” She blinked back the moisture pricking her eyes.

“No, Annie. I don’t think you do. I’m not just scared. I’m terrified.”

And I understood Will’s fear. Weeks prior to reading this novel, my doctor told me I have cancer. It’s a single word that can change the course of your life, emotionally, physically, but not only yours, others around you. And though I knew God’s presence would be with me no matter what the future held, my desire to write or edit anything had vanished. Honestly, I wasn’t sure I wanted to write anymore with my future so uncertain. I wasn’t just scared, but terrified my time with my family would be shortened.

But as I continued to read Will’s story, God’s whispered words, Do not be afraid of things you cannot control, pray, and continue your call to write, took hold and draped around my heart.

I knew at that moment this book was meant to be read at this appointed time. That God was leading me to give Him every single fear, open my laptop, and begin to write again.

During the time I’d stopped writing, I was in the middle of two stories, a contemporary romance, and The Rescue, the first story in the All Roads Lead to Texas series. It took some months before I returned to writing, but I had to give my fears to God the only way I could. Like Will and Annie’s story, day by day. Moment by moment.

In my new novel, The Proposal, the second story in the All Roads Lead to Texas series, Jessica Thompson understands fear and must learn how to give it to God. She has her father’s killer on her trail and the only means for escape is to run, but she never counted on the sheriff of Graham, Texas, to get in her way.

Have you ever had a time in your life where fear caught you so unexpectedly that you didn’t know what to do next? Perhaps you didn’t know where to turn? Maybe couldn’t pray?

I’m here to tell you it’s okay. God knows how you feel, good or bad, it doesn’t change His love for you. Just remember, He’s with you, by your side through it all. He will never leave you.

Along a Storied Trail by Ann Gabhart ~ Book Review

June 29, 2021

About the Book

Book: Along a Storied Trail
Author: Ann H. Gabhart
Genre: Historical Christian Fiction
Publisher: Revell
Release Date: June 1, 2021

Kentucky packhorse librarian Tansy Calhoun doesn't mind the rough trails and long hours as she serves her Appalachian mountain community during the Great Depression. Yet she longs to find love like the heroines in her books. When a charming writer comes to town, she thinks she might have found it--or is the perfect man actually closer than she thinks?

Perdita Sweet has called these mountains home for so long she's nearly as rocky as the soil around her small cabin. Long ago she thought she could love, but when the object of her affection up and married someone else, she stopped giving too much of herself away to others.

As is so often the case, it's easier to see what's best for others than to see what's best for oneself, and Perdita knows who Tansy should choose. But why would anyone listen to the romantic advice of an old spinster?

Saddle up for a heartfelt story of love--love of family, love of place, and the love of a lifetime--from bestselling author Ann H. Gabhart.

My Thoughts

This is my second book by Ann H. Gabhart. I really enjoyed her last book Appalachian Summer so I was super excited to be able to review this book. . I love the style of Ms. Gabhart's writing. She has a such a fantastic way at painting a picture. I felt like I was in the Appalachian mountains along with Tansy, Perdita and the rest of the characters in this story. This takes place in the midst of the Great Depression. Tansy becomes a packhorse librarian not only because she needs the money to help her family but also because she loves books.

The author does a great job with these characters. They are believable and relatable. Tansy like mentioned, has a love of books so right away she becomes a kindred spirit to me. She loves the people of the mountain like family and provides them with a little distraction from daily life through books. Tansy does have a romance story but I won't divulge much as at times it feels like she may not end up with who you want her to be with! For me, Perdita stole the "show" so to speak. She is an ornery old woman but she definitely endears you throughout the story. She has some great nuggets of wisdom throughout the story that opens up the eyes of some of our characters for the better.

Overall I thought this was a great story. It moves a bit slow but it is totally worthwhile. There is a clear Christian message throughout which I definitely appreciate. If you are looking for a new read or a new author to add to your list I definitely recommend Ann H. Gabhart.

My Rating: 4 stars ~ Really Enjoyed it!!

Going South by Marcia Moston ~ Book Review + Giveaway

About the Book

Book:  Going South
Author: Marcia Moston
Genre: Christian nonfiction—humorous, inspirational, Christian-living memoir
Release Date: January 2021

When Bob and Marcia Moston told their friends they were moving south, they meant it as a geographical move. They didn’t expect their plans to go south too.

Trusting his wife’s previously sound judgment, Bob agrees to have Marcia go ahead of him and pick out a house—an efficient, low-maintenance one. It was a good plan. If only Marcia had stuck to it.

But when she veers from the plan, the couple find themselves overwhelmed with the consequences of a seemingly bad decision. Marcia looks for encouragement in the story of Jacob—the patriarchal bad boy, remembered more for the predicaments he got himself into than for his commendable deeds—and the God who is not deterred by our plots, plans, stratagems, and side trips.

Written with heart, humor, and biblical insight, Going South—with the God of Jacob’s and My Mistakes offers hope and encouragement to those who find their lives upturned by a geographical move, a chaotic economy, a backfired dream, or just a plain bad choice.

My Thoughts

This was a fun collection of stories relating to the author's journey of buying, remodeling and selling houses. It is full of humor and some good wisdom. The author definitely provides some spiritual insights and life lessons from her experience. She does it with humor and wit. I honestly didn't expect that in this book but I found it to be enjoyable. It is definitely a different take on a non-fiction book. Overall I thought it was a good book and I think readers that enjoy reading memoirs would greatly enjoy this one.

My Rating: 3 Stars/Liked it

About the Author

Marcia Moston, the award-winning author of Call of a Coward—the God of Moses and the Middle-Class Housewife, has contributed to several magazines, anthologies, and newspaper columns. She loves to write about the possibilities of life in the hands of a very real God. Marcia teaches workshops in narrative nonfiction and makes home in South Carolina with her Bob.

More from Marcia

We were no superstar, sledgehammer-wielding, Fixer Upper Chip and Joanna Gaines. But I was confident my husband and I could handle the repairs that the house I had bought needed. After all, we were handy—solid do-it-yourselfers, excited about starting a new phase of life in a part of the country we’d never lived.

Armed with enthusiasm, experience, and degrees, we didn’t anticipate any problems finding jobs or making friends. And I certainly didn’t anticipate I’d be hanging telephone directories on doorknobs or stuffing vending machines to make ends meet. But our ravenous little fixer-upper had a bigger appetite than we expected and was devouring our funds in record time.

Before long we began to realize we’d left life as we knew it somewhere north of the Mason-Dixon Line. I wondered if, instead of running strong to the finish line of our lives, we would be crawling across it, covered in sheetrock dust and regrets.

It’s one thing to suffer for a noble cause, but quite another when you find yourself in messes and muddles of your own making time and time again. Like Jacob, some of us have to wrestle an angel of the Lord all night before we get to the end of ourselves and trust that the Lord can and will orchestrate all he’s appointed for us.

I wrote about our southern saga foibles in Going South with the God of Jacob’s and My Mistakes as an entertaining reminder for all of us trying to find our way home, that even when we make bad decisions and big mistakes, the Carpenter of Nazareth can fashion something beautiful from the dust and debris we trail behind.

My Thoughts

This is the second book in the Song of Seare series. I have not read the first one at all but decided to push through and read it anyhow. I did add the first book to my TBR list to read at a later time. I do recommend you read the first one as it will introduce you to the culture and religion of the realm you are reading about. Plus you won't be as lost as I was in the beginning of the story. I was so intrigued by everything thought that it was easy to get submerged into this story and be captured by it!

In this story you continue the story with some amazing characters. Granted for me it was the first time I was meeting them and I thought they were superb. I sadly don't know how much growth they have gone through since I just met them but I loved seeing the development of their gifts throughout the story. There is not shadow of doubt on who is good and evil in this book which I really appreciated it. There is plenty of action to keep you engaged.

A fantasy book has to grab me from the beginning for me to even read it. That's why books like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Narnia stand out for me. I really enjoyed the magical world that the respective authors have created in these books. Carla has done the same with this book and series. She has created an amazing magical world. I am always in awe at the authors that can do this. I mean the imagination that they have is utterly amazing and I can appreciate that. There is talk of dark magic in this book and I know there are some that immediately that is a turn off. If that's not your thing then I completely understand but don't bash it. To me it was very clear that the Gospel of Jesus is written throughout and conveyed in this story. I definitely saw great lessons in this story that demonstrated God's faithfulness.

Overall I thought the author did an amazing job at creating this magical world. I can't wait to read the first one and the last one to see how it all began and how it all ends. If you enjoy fantasy books, especially Christian Fantasy then I would put this at the top of your list!

My Rating: 4 Stars

Fictional Magic… and Why It Matters to Us

The first book in the Song of Seare series introduced the culture, religion, and characters of my fictional universe, but it’s this second book, Beneath the Forsaken City, that really delves into the magic of the world, both light and dark.

The light magic in the series comes directly from Comdiu (their version of the Christian God), given as gifts to his people to be used in His service. I approached the creation of this magic much as the real-world church views spiritual gifts: everyone might have a different gift, some people may have more than one, but all of them are meant to be used within the context of God’s commands and promises. They come from a purely good source, but when used for our own glory or for selfish ends or even just without full understanding, they have the potential to be twisted into something that’s harmful or ineffective. In Beneath the Forsaken City, Aine learns how carefully she must wield her powers in order not to sow discord in those around her; Conor must come to grips with the limits and the boundaries of his own abilities, battling the ever-present temptation of pride.

The dark magic, on the other hand, comes from the Adversary either in the form of sorcery or in the powers of the sidhe, the spirits who haunt the isle of Seare and beyond. For this, I delved both into the Celtic myths and fairie tales as well as neo-pagan rituals, particularly for details on scrying. I approached the topic thinking it was a somewhat harmless, if ineffective, practice and left with a deep sense of spiritual unease—this is the type of thing the Bible warns against when it forbids divination and witchcraft. Consequently, when Conor is approached with the opportunity to scry for an answer he desperately needs, he battles the temptation of his own desires against his very clear understanding that it’s dark, forbidden magic.

Some of this may seem academic to the modern Christian reader—most of us aren’t going to be tempted by dark magic or pagan rituals. But I meant it to reflect a warning and a lesson in our larger walk with Christ. Things that come from darkness can never be used for light, even when our intentions are good—God has forbidden them for a reason, because of their danger to ourselves, others, or the integrity of our own souls. Even the gifts and abilities that have been God-given for the use of His kingdom can be corrupted by sin if we’re not anchored to the heart and purpose of Christ.

That’s why my deepest wish is that readers of Beneath the Forsaken City will look beyond the fantasy elements of Seare to the real-world lessons beneath—and be both warned and encouraged in their own spiritual walks.

My Thoughts

This is an enjoyable historical mystery story centered around WWI and WWII. The author did a great job with the setting and added many details including songs of the time as well as cars, movies and the clothing. It makes the story come alive. Throughout the plot there is a good amount of mystery and suspense. The characters are well developed and engaging. Teddy made a great heroine. I enjoyed the banter/bickering between her and PI Ric. It made the relationship very realistic.

This is my second book by this author and I think she does a phenomenal job at weaving a strong Christian message throughout the story. Overall I thought this was a good story. If you enjoy historical mysteries then this would be a good addition to your list! Oh, and even though this is part of a series they are meant to be read as stand alones.

My Rating: 3 Stars/I liked it!

I received this book through Celebrate Lit. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

More from Linda

Dear readers:

I grew up in New Jersey and often went into New York City for school field trips and family visits. One of my favorite places to go was Madison Square Garden. I have lots of happy memories, so I wondered if I could possibly set a book there. I spent a lovely afternoon digging into the building’s past and learning about the important, historic events that took place there. When I discovered that aviator Charles Lindbergh spoke at the Garden about the controversial topic of U.S. isolationism prior to America’s entry into WWII, I knew I had the beginning of a story.

My protagonist came about during one of my shifts as a volunteer docent at the Wright Museum of WWII. While talking to one of our guests about our wartime print and broadcast journalism display, the conversation turned to the role that women played. Therese Bonney was a one of the photojournalists highlighted in the exhibit. As I studied her picture, I was struck by her determination in the set of her jaw and look in her eyes. My protagonist Theodora “Teddy” Schafer was born.

I enjoyed my trip down Memory Lane at the Garden during my research and had fun subjecting Teddy to uncomfortable situations as she tried to prove her innocence. But most of all, I hope her story honors the men and women who served in countless ways during this difficult time in history.

Enjoy Murder at Madison Square Garden.

Linda
