For years they've been nomads for justice, but a final mission may just lead their hearts home.

Members of the legendary Hanger's Horsemen, Mark Wallace and Jonah Brooks arrive in Llano County, Texas, to deliver a steed, never expecting they'd help deliver a baby as well. Left with an infant to care for, they head to a nearby foundling home, where Mark encounters the woman he nearly married a decade ago.

After failing at love, Katherine Palmer has dedicated her life to caring for children, teaming up with Eliza Southerland to start Harmony House. Eliza understands the pain of not fitting society's mold, being illegitimate and of mixed ancestry. Yet those are the very attributes that lead her to minister to outcast children. The taciturn Jonah intrigues her by defying all her stereotypes of men, but there are secrets behind his eyes—ghosts from wars past and others still being waged.

When the Horsemen hear rumors of missing children, they stay to investigate, sticking close to Harmony House and its beautiful owners. As they work together to uncover the truth, love and danger grow hand in hand until a final sinister scheme threatens to destroy them all.

My Thoughts

It was so good to return to this series by Karen Witemeyer! I absolutely love her as an author so to receive one of her books to review is a pleasure. This is book two in the Hanger's Horsemen series. Although you could technically read this book without having to read the first one I recommend that you do simply because you will get to know a little more backstory on these characters and also get to know who the Hanger's Horsemen, how they came about and what they do. Also it's just a good story.

In this book we meet Mark Wallace and Jonah Brooks. It was different having a book not focus on two main characters but rather four. Karen Witemeyer does a great job at writing this where both sets of characters have different personal storylines that follow the same plot. I wasn't confused at all but rather fully engaged in these characters and the story.

The story begins and right away you are immersed in the lives of these two horsemen as they are helping a woman deliver a baby! I mean if that doesn't get you sucked into a story, I don't know what will! As a result of this they encounter a foundling home run by Mark's former love interest Katherine. There are lot of things that happen in this story and the love story between Mark and Katherine was amazing but I must say that for me Jonah and Eliza made the book for me as far as relationships go! Jonah is the quiet type while Eliza is feisty and a total no-nonsense woman and I was all about it! Their banter and chemistry was absolutely my favorite.

The story has a good amount of adventure, mystery, intrigue and of course romance! I am not going to spoil it for you but I am telling you, you definitely have to read it. I will tell you this, it took me a minute to figure out who the true culprit was but I had my suspicions the whole time.  It was great to see the characters from the first book. Oh, and Abner will definitely tug at your heartstrings!

Overall I thought this was a great story. Karen Witemeyer does a great job at interweaving God's word throughout the story. She also did a good job in the topic of acceptance and overcoming circumstances whether because of parenthood or the color of your skin, God sees us for us, the outward appearance doesn't matter as long as your heart is right with Him. I can't wait to read the next one... now I have to be patient and wait!

My Rating: 4 Stars/ Really Liked it!

Favorite Musings/Quotes:

"A strange thing happens when you find yourself on the outside of society. You start to see the world from a different perspective. Satan uses loneliness to isolate and depress. But God uses it to build compassion."

I received a copy of this book from the publisher Bethany House. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
