From this Moment by Kim Vogel Sawyer ~ Book Review

February 10, 2021

 ABOUT THE BOOK

Author:
Kim Vogel Sawyer
Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance
Publisher: Waterbrook
Release Date: February 23, 2021
Pages: 352

A lost ring brings together two wounded souls--a youth minister haunted by the past and a spunky church custodian--in this heartwarming romance from the bestselling author of The Librarian of Boone's Hollow.

Growing up in the foster care system, Jase Edgar always dreamed of one day starting his own family. But his fiancee's untimely death shattered his plans. Moving to Kansas and serving as a youth minister should be a fresh start, but he can't seem to set aside his doubts about God's goodness long enough to embrace his new life.

Newly-appointed church custodian, Lori Fowler is battling her own challenges. Her strained relationship with her father and her struggles with overeating convince her she's not worthy enough for love. When an Amish weaver enlists their help locating the owner of a ring found among the donated clothing she uses as fabric, Jase and Lori find themselves drawn to each other. But will they be able to release the past and move forward from this moment into a joyful future?

MY THOUGHTS

It has been a long time since I have read a Kim Vogel Sawyer book and I am glad that I was able to read this one. It was a inspiring and well written. The characters were definitely relatable and endearing. There are multiple story lines happening but it definitely doesn't get confusing so they are easy to read and follow. There is a bit of mystery surrounding the ring found so it makes the story interesting.

There are quite a few characters that are introduced but some the main ones are Laurie, Kenzie and Jase. Kenzie is a former Amish girl who learned about God and decided to leave her order to follow her beliefs. She lives a simple life and works with Lori. They both have had some difficult times in their lives which has made it difficult for them to progress. Jase has also had some heartache as he not only looks back at his life as a foster care child and sees the things he didn't have but also losing his fiancee in a fatal accident brings some struggles in trusting God.

Overall this was a good story. It touches on some deep points like Lori's eating disorder and insecurities. The element of faith and redemption moves throughout the book flawlessly but this story moved a little slow for me and I found myself making myself read it. I was also disappointed in the romantic aspect of it. Since the book started with Kenzie I just thought the love story would revolve around her and Jase, instead it was Jase and Lori which fell a little flat for me.

My Rating: 3 Stars/ Liked it

Waltzing in the Wilderness by Kathleen Denly ~ Book Review

February 9, 2021

ABOUT THE BOOK

Author:
Kathleen Denly
Series: Chaparral Hearts, Book 1
Genre: Christian Historical Fiction
Publisher: Wild Heart
Release Date: February 4, 2020
Pages: 356

She's desperate to find her missing father. His conscience demands he risk all to help.

Eliza Brooks is haunted by her role in her mother's death, so she'll do anything to find her missing pa—even if it means sneaking aboard a southbound ship. When those meant to protect her abandon and betray her instead, a family friend's unexpected assistance is a blessing she can't refuse.

Daniel Clarke came to California to make his fortune, and a stable job as a San Francisco carpenter has earned him more than most have scraped from the local goldfields. But it's been four years since he left Massachusetts and his fiancée is impatient for his return. Bound for home at last, Daniel Clarke finds his heart and plans challenged by a tenacious young woman with haunted eyes. Though every word he utters seems to offend her, he is determined to see her safely returned to her father. Even if that means risking his fragile engagement.

When disaster befalls them in the remote wilderness of the Southern California mountains, true feelings are revealed, and both must face heart-rending decisions. But how to decide when every choice before them leads to someone getting hurt?

MY THOUGHTS
I really enjoyed this book. It was captivating right from the start as we meet Eli who really is Eliza. She has lost her mother and blames herself. She is with her dad in the gold mines, poor, hungry and most of all definitely not being a lady. Her dad realizes that this is not the place for her and takes the chance of taking her to his brother in San Francisco. Eliza is none too happy about his decision and this is where the story truly begins for me.
Eliza is definitely very close to her father and I think a huge part of it stems from blaming herself for the death of her mom. She doesn't want to lose him too and wants to make sure that he is well. When he leaves her with her uncle without her knowledge she is furious but it is truly for the best despite her Aunt Cecilia. Seriously her aunt is one of those characters that you despise due to her attitude. Now back to Eliza, it took me a while to get to like her. On the outside she seems like a selfish, self centered brat. But once you get to know her inner being, you understand why she is like that.
We meet Daniel who is absolutely amazing! You know I am going to say it... he is definitely swoon-worthy! He is a true gentleman and even though he is engaged to Alice he can't help being drawn to Eliza. So when Eliza decides that she needs to find her father and boards a ship unchaperoned of course my man Daniel steps up to the job especially after he sees how the captain and the other men are eyeing her. (I told you he's swoon worthy) He treks it all over God's creation to help her find her father and during all of this you can't help but love Eliza because finally her shell is breaking and she sees that she can trust and open herself to something more than herself. That God is the person she needs to be trusting for everything. That was an amazing moment.
I know you are thinking of Alice... but don't worry about her. I assure you everything does get resolved for her in the best possible way. I will say that Alice was a great addition to the story and I do hope we get to see her in the next book as I would like to know what happens to her brother and mother.
This is Kathleen Denly's debut novel and I have to say I am very impressed! She not only did a great job at painting a picturesque setting in which you can lose yourself in but made some great characters that you can relate to.  I for one cannot wait to read the next one, which just happens to be on my bookshelf!
My Rating: 4 Stars/ Really Liked this Story!
Swoon Worthy Level - 💗💗💗💗 (seriously when he asks her to dance....gah!)

Homeschool Curriculum Picks 2020-2021

February 8, 2021

This blog post has been a long time coming! My apologies for posting so late but life, mom life and reviews got in the way and I never had a chance to sit down and write this. So here we are. Although we homeschool year round this year we took some time off during the summer to upgrade our homeschool room and give it a much needed makeover. The kids are getting bigger
and needed more space to place things around a table rather than our previous small desks. I wrote a small post about it here. You can check out what we did!

I typically don't do school grades and everyone works on different levels of things but for the sake of you readers I will tell you what grades they are "supposed" to be in by public school standards. So we call them levels and when they finish one they "Level Up" they enjoy the video game terminology! As previously stated in other posts for the sole purpose of this blog I use nicknames for my kids that truly suit their personalities!

Also I should mention that some subjects we do all together and some the kids work on independently. It should be an interesting year as all of them will be doing some type of curriculum. (Pray for me!! LOL!)  Someone asked me to describe myself as a homeschool mom and honestly I am not sure. I am a little bit of everything but with a stronger leaning towards traditional and Charlotte Mason all mixed into one!

Let's Dig In!

The Jedi Master - 6th Grade

Gah! I still cannot believe that I have a middle schooler on my hands. He is definitely quite the character. He still LOVES Star Wars. He knows more about that subject than anything else. The big hit for him this year was the Mandalorian which we watched every Friday night as a family. We switched things a little bit this year for him so I am hoping it all works out.

Reading: This year I decided to leave Christian Light Publications just to take a break and focus on just reading books that are classics or meaningful stories. I made a small basket for him which has these books and he gets to pick what he wants to read next. Typically I have already read the book or will read the chapter so that we can discuss it together. Books in the basket so far are: Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, Henry Muggins, The Tiger Rising, Basher Five-Two and Jonny Tremain just to name a few.  We will see how this goes, I am hoping it works well for him. He is used to workbooks so this will definitely be different and more relaxed for him.

Language Arts: This year we are starting Writing Strands Beginning 2 from Masterbooks. I felt like he needed more practice with his writing and I think this will really help him out. I also love that the lessons are short which will give me time to work with the smaller ones. The text of the book is written as if the author is speaking to the user which is neat. I also love that Bible is incorporated into this curriculum. They rotate weeks so one week will be reading and the following week is writing. The reading pieces are from the Bible or the current book they happen to be reading.

Math: Sticking with CLE!! If you read my previous post you know the blunder I made and I will not be making that again. Despite all of that he was able to jump right into Level 6. The first book is usually a review of the previous year which we definitely needed! Hopefully he will be successful at it.

Spelling: Because we aren't doing a Reading program and the Language Arts that he is working on will not have a spelling list I thought it was important to incorporate that into his day. So I bought Spelling Workout Level F from Christian Book. These lessons are short and he can work on them independently.

The Gentle Ninja - 3rd Grade

Here is my ADHD, sensory kiddo that has made HUGE
strides!! Definitely has been a slower pace with him but I have learned so much and I have seen so much growth that it is truly exciting!

Reading: Because we are still working with phonics I knew I needed something a lot gentler for him. So after much research I decided to go with All About Reading Level 2. I think it will help him boost his confidence a lot more and get him to enjoy reading.

Language Arts: We are going to continue using Language Lessons for a Living Education from Masterbooks. This year he will work on Level 3. I have really enjoyed this program for him. It's very gentle and short. He doesn't have to sit there for long trying to complete a lesson. He enjoys it as well!

Math: We are definitely sticking with CLE however because of my blunder he will not be able to jump right into Level 4 as CLE Math is very advanced. By this level they are already doing multiplication and division and that is not something that the previous math really covered in depth. So we will be doing Math 3 this year from CLE and working our way through that! (Hence why I don't use grades in our house!)

The Cuddly Scientist - First Grade

How can my baby boy be in first grade?! Gosh he is such a sponge right now and wants to learn everything. He is definitely eager to know all the things but as a typical boy he also doesn't want to sit on a chair for hours on end!

Reading - Well we have begun our journey into learning how to read! And so he will continue using CLE which to me has the one of the best phonics programs out there. There is no fluff to it just straight up learning phonics which is what I like. He will continue with Learning to Read and move to Reading Level 1 when he is done with the phonics program.

Language Arts - I decided not to do the CLE Language Arts that I had done with my previous two boys and that correlates with the Learning to Read program. There is a simple explanation and that is I feel like it makes the days super long!! And learning from the experiences of my older boys I didn't want that for this little guy. So I bought the Masterbooks Language Lessons for a Living Education. However, I will not start this program until he is finished with all of his Reading program from CLE.

Math - You know what I am going to say! CLE all the way!! He will begin Math 1 and begin his journey in the CLE Math program.

The Firecracker - Kindergarten

Gasp! I no longer have any preschoolers... my heart hurts saying that! She will be starting her journey with CLE using their Kindergarten Program. It's fun and it prepares them for what they will see in older grades. But she will not be doing school with us all of the time as she is still in the learn by play stage and I am completely fine with that. She enjoys doing lots of crafts and playing with blocks, puzzles and play-doh and we have plenty of those things for her to use.

Our Together Time

This year we will still do our History, Science and Devotions together. Morning Time is still a HUGE part of our day. This year we are using Masterbooks Apologetics as part of our devotions & Copywork time. (Not pictured but if you click on the link it should take you to it!)We are also continuing doing a Hymn a month. (I will try to write another post regarding which Hymns we used which months at a later time.) We will also be reading the Little House on the Prairie Series and doing activities with the books.

We are going to attempt to use Notgrass Uncle Sam and You for our History and I say attempt because it looks a bit dry and I am not sure how it will go over with the kids or me.

We will be doing US Geography this year and we are using Geo Matters for that. I sent the books to be printed and hopefully they will arrive in time!

Science we are going to be using Christian Kids Explore for Biology and I think it will be a good fit but I am never sure on Science. I also thought that for the little ones it would be great to incorporate some Nature Studies so I bout Exploring Nature with Children and I really hope we enjoy it!

Those are the plans for this year and I am sure things will change as nothing is ever set in stone but I will update you around March/April and see how things are going or maybe I'll just update you at the end of our school year... we will see!

Just so they are handy here are the websites for the curriculum choices we are using: ( I am in no way affiliated with the companies and I do not receive anything for sharing. I am an affiliate for Amazon and Christianbook)

My Thoughts

This story is pretty unique as it is being told through the youngest characters. Mainly one of them. There are to what some may consider heavier matters in the storyline but the author does a great job at dealing with them tactfully and in a very gentle manner. The characters are for the most part pretty likable. I can't say that I can relate to any of them but they definitely each brought something unique to the story. Out of the two younger characters Alice was the one that takes over this story and Ivy kind of stayed more in the background. Perhaps the next book she plays a bigger role.

The mystery aspect of the book for me lacked some "umph" and perhaps this is why I found it a bit slow and at times dragging. Overall I think this young author has a lot of great potential and I am sure she will grow and continue to produce great books.

My Rating: 3 Stars / Liked it

About the Author

Kellyn Roth is a Christian historical women’s fiction & romance author from North-Eastern Oregon who has independently published multiple novels, the most notable being The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy series. You should definitely call her Kell.

Kell lives on family-owned property outside an unmemorable but historical town with her parents, two little brothers, arbitrary cat, precious border collies, a dozen cows, and lots of chickens. She also possesses a classic, vintage aesthetic which does not at all speak to her country girl side, but such is life.

When not writing, Kell likes to blog, teach writing to her various students, have day jobs which allow her to keep her car properly insured, and spend lavish amounts of money on Dairy Queen french fries.

More from Kellyn

I’ve honestly never rewritten a book as many times as I rewrote The Dressmaker’s Secret, and I hope I never do.

A first draft flew out of me one November when I was fourteen, and before the next November had come around, I’d gone through twelve drafts, changed points of view multiple times, and eventually rewrote the whole thing from scratch.

The ending especially went through many, many versions … until at last I settled on the final. Or so I thought.

Not long after, some more issues were called to light, and I revised again. And again. Years passed. I went through over twenty-five drafts! And, at the time, I liked all of them. Would I ever like one for longer than a month, though?

Well, turns out, it was possible! I’m over a year and a half into loving my draft of The Dressmaker’s Secret – e.g. the published draft – and that’s not likely to change any time soon.

This book taught me a lot. It practically taught me how to write – and edit! – a good book, and it made me really focus in on quality, even when it took some humility to admit I was wrong and critics were right – or, sometimes, that my gut was right. It taught me to not give up on something I love. It taught me that the risks I always wanted to take are worth taking. It taught me that no mistake is too great to be corrected … well, in some ways, at least.

And it taught me that there’s a great God out there who has grace for all my delays and mistakes and learning experiences.

So, that’s the story of how The Dressmaker’s Secret came to be written!

Maverick Heart by Natalie Bright ~ Book Review

February 4, 2021

ABOUT THE BOOK

Author:
Natalie Bright & Denise McAllister
Series: Wild Cow Ranch, Book 1
Genre: Contemporary Christian Fiction/Western
Publisher: CKN Christian Publishing
Pages: 274
Release Date: January 13, 2021

FROM HORSE SHOWING IN GEORGIA TO RIDING THE RANGE IN TEXAS – A TALE OF COURAGE AND FINDING FAITH.

Carli Jameson is used to being on her own – abandoned by her mother as an infant – all she’s ever wanted is to feel like she belongs. She has had no choice except to be strong and independent, but now, can she learn to trust God to be her partner?

Georgia girl, Carli Jameson, inherits a Texas cattle ranch from grandparents she never knew. After much thought, she makes the courageous decision to pack up her life and move to Texas to run the ranch. She forges ahead into a new life filled with uncertainty and along the way discovers a ranching community that becomes the family she never had.

Independent, ambitious and smart, Carli has always been careful with her heart, except for the one time she thought she had found her soul mate and true love. He proved her wrong, and she vowed never to jump into a romantic relationship that easily again. When Carli drives away from her life in Georgia, no looking back, she intends to stick with her vow and not fall into any sweet romances, especially with a Texas cowboy.

Can a fresh start erase the troubles of her past?

MY THOUGHTS

This story is one of new beginnings and this was the case for Carli Jamison. We follow Carli who has been abandoned as a child and has no idea who her father is. She deals with issues of trust. She is used to doing things on her own and doesn't require help from anyone. She has a hard time depending on God but encounters Lola and Buck who are very strong in their faith and guide her in the right path.

I have to admit I wasn't sure about her character at first. She seems very immature and I wasn't quite sure if the story was about an adult or an older teenager. As the story continues you can tell that she is after all an adult but it took me a while to get into her character because of the things she worried and focused on like her "boyfriend" just seemed like something you would do at a younger age. She did have some growth throughout the story which redeemed her in my mind.

Overall I thought the story was good. It was my first by these authors. I think young adults and people that absolutely love horses will enjoy this story.

Book 1 of The Justice Chronicles will leave you breathless, wanting more...

My Thoughts

Okay this is definitely, completely out of my typical genre that I enjoy reading. Although I do step out of my "historical fiction/romance" comfort zone at times with fantasy and suspense this has a completely different vibe to it. It was like reading a Christian script of the show Criminal Minds or FBI Most Wanted. You know those shows that leave you feeling the heebie jeebies, kind of like that but in a good way.

The story line is great and you can tell that the author has done a great amount of research. Maybe a bit too much as at times there were some parts that had a little too much dialogue that I found not really aiding the story but just adding extra wording to the pages. That being said the writing itself is great. I really enjoyed that it is a clean read. It does get a strange at times and there was a bit too much supernatural elements for my liking but it is emerging from Biblical principles. The reality of Spiritual Warfare is definitely something that the author highlights. I can't say that I connected with the characters but I felt like they were well developed and likeable.

Overall I thought it was a good book that brought me out of my comfort zone. I recommend it if you enjoy supernatural elements in your stories and books that make you think and delve into the Word (Bible) to dig deeper for answers.

My Rating: 4 Stars/ Really Liked it even if it was out of my element!
